How Much Does a Sprinkler System Cost in 2022?

Residential Sprinkler System Cost for 2022

Thinking about installing a new sprinkler system for your property this year, but not sure about how much to budget? We’ve got you covered.

First of all, maybe it goes without saying, but every yard (and sprinkler installation process) is slightly different. When considering how much it costs to install a sprinkler system, this is very important to keep in mind.

That said, we’re still comfortable giving you a ballpark estimate for what you can expect to pay in 2022 for a residential sprinkler system in the Southern Illinois and St. Louis Metro-East area. On average, we’d say a new sprinkler installation runs anywhere from $3000 to $3500.

Whenever a potential customer submits a request for a free sprinkler system estimate, our crew conducts an assessment of their property and determines how much the sprinkler system costs depending on a number of factors specific to the job:

The Main Factors Affecting Sprinkler Installation Cost in 2022:

  • Total Watering Area

This is perhaps the most obvious factor affecting the average cost of a sprinkler system. The total acreage of your property’s watering area will naturally determine the number of materials needed like PVC pipe, polyethylene piping, and sprinkler heads. Simply put, the more grass to water, the more materials we need to install.

Our crew also takes your overall watering plan into account. For example, a wide-open 10-acre property will require a different plan of attack than a 10-acre property with an abundance of landscaping or other barriers like fencing. The variety and difficulty levels associated with your watering area can have just as much of an effect on your sprinkler system estimate as the total area.

  • Types of Sprinkler Head

Expanding on the point above, the types of sprinkler heads required to successfully maintain 100% water coverage on your property will also affect the final sprinkler cost for your residential system.

Obviously, no two yards are exactly alike, and in the sprinkler installation world, that means that no two installs are the same either.

The zone types your lawn requires will dictate the type of materials and labor that will be required.

In general, zone types can be broken up into three categories: turf, landscape, and drip zones. The basic difference between the three is the amount of water needed in those areas to achieve the desired growth levels.

A drip zone, for example, slowly drips water supply straight to the roots of your garden or landscape, but requires a specialized install with separate piping designed to facilitate that slow drip.

Broad turf zones, however, operate best on a cycle and soak program where the heads achieve a wide water coverage area for short spurts of time, then let the water soak into the soil beneath your grass before eventually repeating the process.

The number of each type of zone (and their corresponding sprinkler heads) will directly influence your total costs.

  • Type of Water Tap Required

Irrigation systems will also require different types of water taps, which in essence simply means that the “hook up” to your main water supply comes with varying levels of difficulties as well.

A simple pit tap located next to your water meter, for example, will be easier (and cheaper) to tackle than hooking into a deeply buried copper water line.

Most of our customers reside in Illinois, which comes with its own hurdles in the form of plumbing licensing requirements. Each Illinois sprinkler system installation means contracting with a licensed plumber to tap into the water main, which increases the cost to install the sprinkler system.

  • Additional Add-Ons

We also offer a variety of add-ons for your residential sprinkler system, like rain and soil sensors, wifi compatibility, and phone apps, all of which come with great benefits but will affect your total expenses to some degree.

The Average Cost of a Sprinkler System

On average, we’d say that a typical residential sprinkler system runs anywhere from $3,000 to $3,500 dollars for installation.

As an added bonus to our customers, we also include the first year’s start-up and winterization services in that price, as well as any timer programming required for your system.

Naturally, though, we encourage you to read and familiarize yourself with the factors listed above, so you can be as informed as possible when our sales staff completes your free estimate!
